What you need
- A power outlet
- WiFi access on the 2.4GHz band
- A smartphone or computer
Setting up your subway clock
- Power on. Connect the clock to an outlet and wait about 15 seconds. It powers on automatically.
- Initial display. The LED screen shows the message "Starting... follow the instructions..."
- Connect to the clock's WiFi. On your phone or computer, open your WiFi settings. Make sure you are on the 2.4GHz band, not 5GHz, and connect to the network NYCSubwayTimer using the password printed in your instructions.
- Configure. Open a browser (Chrome or Safari) and go to http://nycsubwaytimer.net. On the configuration page, set your home WiFi, the subway lines to display, your color choices, and any other options you want. Click "Save all" at the bottom of the page, then choose "reboot".
- Final display. After about 90 seconds the clock cycles through "Starting" and "Waiting for new data", then shows live arrivals.
Turning it off
Press the button on the top right side of the clock.
Changing the WiFi, station, or colors
Press the settings button on the bottom right side of the clock. This turns the display off and puts the clock back into WiFi setup mode. Then follow the setup steps above from the beginning.
Troubleshooting
- The clock is not turning on. Check that the power cable is seated in both the outlet and the clock's USB-C port. If there is still no response, disconnect the power, wait 60 seconds, and reconnect.
- It will not connect to the internet. Confirm your home WiFi is active. Your home network must not itself be named "NYCSubwayTimer".
- Some selected lines are not displayed. Lines go in and out of service for maintenance. Pick alternate lines if available, and remember that lines like the B and Z do not run on weekends.
- I cannot find the NYCSubwayTimer network. Check that the clock is powered on, then press the configuration button to start broadcasting. A scrolling message confirms it is active.
- What order are the trains in? By arrival time at your station, nearest first.
- It shows "Waiting for new data" and then turns off. Early models could not track more than 10 trains. If yours is affected, use the configuration button to reach the update option for your device.
