Deep Shelf with L Brackets Installation Instructions

These instructions cover our deep shelf with black steel L brackets. The brackets lag bolt into wall studs, and the shelf bolts to the brackets from underneath, which is what lets this shelf carry roughly 100 pounds per bracket. It is part of our wood shelves with brackets collection.

What is in the box

  • Shelf
  • Steel L brackets
  • Lag bolts

Tools you need

  • Drill, with a 3/16 inch bit
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Stud finder
  • Wrench or socket

Installation steps

  1. Determine the shelf placement. Decide where the shelf goes and use a level to draw a horizontal line across where the top of the shelf will sit.
  2. Locate and mark the studs. Find the studs with a stud finder and mark their edges along your line. Studs are usually 16 inches apart. For the best support, mount into at least two studs.
  3. Pre-drill the holes. Drill 3/16 inch pilot holes for the lag bolts where your line crosses the studs, ideally 2 to 3 inches in from each end of the shelf.
  4. Install the brackets. Drive the lag bolts with a wrench or socket. Do not overtighten.
  5. Install the shelf. Set the wood shelf on top of the brackets and drive the lag bolts up into the shelf from the underside of each bracket.

Other wall types

  • No studs where you need them? We strongly suggest toggle bolts.
  • Tile backsplash. Pre-drill through the tile with a 5/16 inch masonry (diamond) bit, then drill into the studs behind it with the 3/16 inch bit. Mount the brackets with the provided lag bolts, or the XL lag bolts for thicker walls and tile.
  • Brick or concrete. Pre-drill a 1/4 inch hole and install the brackets with masonry bolts.
