Picture Ledge Installation Instructions

These instructions cover our solid wood picture ledge. It hangs on two keyholes cut into the back, and the kit includes everything you need to set the screws at exactly the right height. You will find it with our other ledge, plate, and vinyl display shelves.

What is in the box

  • Ledge shelf
  • Wall markers
  • Marker remover
  • Circle spacer
  • Screws
  • Drywall anchors

Tools you need

  • Drill, with 3/16 inch and 3/32 inch bits
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Screwdriver

Installation steps

  1. Prepare. Decide where it goes. Push the wall markers into the keyholes on the back. Hold the piece level against the wall and press it on, so the markers dimple the wall where the screws will go.
  2. Drill pilot holes. On drywall, drill 3/16 inch pilot holes at the dimple marks and tap the drywall anchors in. If the 3/16 inch bit feels too small for the anchor, step up slightly. On wood or a stud, drill 3/32 inch pilot holes and skip the anchors.
  3. Insert the screws. Start the screws in the pilot holes. Hold the circle spacer against the wall and drive each screw until its head is flush with the spacer, then remove the spacer. That leaves the screw standing off the wall by exactly the right amount.
  4. Hang it. Use the marker removal tool to pull the wall markers out of the keyholes. Push the keyholes onto the screw heads and slide down to lock. If it feels loose, tighten the screws a little further.

Using the ledge

Lean frames, prints, and small objects against the wall; the front lip keeps them from sliding. Layer larger frames at the back and smaller ones in front, and rearrange whenever you like without new nail holes.
