Coat & Hat Racks

Keyhole slots. The back of each rack has slots routed into the wood: drive two screws into the wall, hook the slots over the heads, and the rack drops into place sitting flush. No visible hardware from the front, and the rack lifts off whenever you need it down. Screws and anchors are included.

Solid maple or oak, cut, shaped, and finished in our Brooklyn woodshop, with traditional turned shaker pegs. Maple runs pale and smooth; oak brings more visible grain. For a steel version, the black wall mounted rack from our metal line does the same job in powder coated steel.

The backboard. The Classic is a clean rectangle, the traditional shaker silhouette. The Arch curves the top edge into an arch, a softer line that reads a little more sculptural on the wall. Same solid maple or oak, same pegs, same keyhole mounting. There is also the Disc Hat Rack, a single peg on a thick round disc for one hat or one coat per spot.

Two, three, four, or six, scaling with the length of the rack. Two or three pegs suit a hallway or a bedroom door; the six peg rack handles a family entryway. Each turned peg holds a heavy winter coat, a bag, or a couple of hats stacked on top of each other.

Aim for the pegs to land around 60 to 66 inches off the floor, which keeps long coats clear of the ground and the pegs within easy reach. Mounting a second, lower rack around 48 inches puts pegs at kid height, and the keyhole system makes moving it later a two-screw job.
