About this piece

A wall-mounted hat rack built in Brooklyn from solid hardwood. A turned shaker peg set high on a thick round disc, edges eased all the way around, so a cap rests over the peg and keeps its shape instead of collapsing against the wall.

Available in solid maple or solid oak. Works in an entryway, mudroom, or hallway, and looks right in a row of three or more. The peg holds an umbrella, a tote, or a dog leash just as well.

What kinds of hats does it hold?

Caps, flat caps, beanies, bucket hats, and soft brimmed hats. Rest the crown over the peg and the 8" backboard supports the shape from behind. Stiff wide brim hats like a cowboy hat will hang, but the brim extends past the wood rather than resting on it.

Does it work for baseball caps?

Yes, and it's what the rack does best. The 8" disc is about the width of a cap crown, so the cap covers it cleanly, and the 3" peg gives the crown room to sit without the bill pressing against the wall.

How far apart should I space them if I'm hanging several?

12" on center is the general answer. That leaves 4" of wall between discs and keeps hats clear of each other. For caps you can tighten to 10". Past 14" they start reading as separate objects instead of a set.

Will hanging a hat on a peg stretch it out?

It can, if you hang it by the back strap for months at a time. Rest the crown over the peg instead and the weight sits across the whole crown rather than one seam. Felt and straw both do fine this way.

How does it mount, and will it hold in drywall?

Each rack mounts on two screws behind the disc, which keeps it from rotating and spreads the load. Anchors and screws included. Into a stud it holds well past anything you'd hang on it. In drywall the included anchors are rated to 60 lbs.
