Frequently Asked Questions
Shelves
What dimensions do our shelves come in?
We offer many sizes for all types of wall projects, from small accent shelves to large, sturdy storage solutions. Our product listings have standard sizes, with custom sizing available on request.
Standard shelf sizes:
Width/Depth: 3″ – 12″
Length: 3″ – 84″
Thickness: 7/8″ or 1 3/8″
If you don't see the size you need, we offer custom cut floating shelves in almost any dimension. Just let us know your measurements using our contact form.
What screws or hardware should I use for installation?
We recommend attaching your shelves directly into wall studs using high-quality screws.
For our thick floating shelves:
Use #10 wood screws (for wood studs) or sheet metal screws (for metal studs), 2"–3″ long. If studs are not an option, use heavy-duty anchors. We recommend toggle bolts or similar steel anchors.
For our thin floating shelves:
While we still recommend installing some brackets into studs, you may use medium-duty drywall anchors for our smaller shelves. Screw size is dependent on the size and shape of the shelves, so follow the instructions on the specific product page.
For shelves with visible brackets:
Mount brackets into studs when possible. If studs are not an option, use heavy-duty anchors. We recommend toggle bolts or similar steel anchors.
We include mounting hardware for all our shelves, and each product page specifies what’s included. However, your installation may be different than our recommended installation application. If you are unsure which screws or anchors to use for your wall (drywall, plaster, brick, or concrete), reach out to us. We’re happy to help you find the best option.
What is the weight capacity of our shelves?
The weight your floating shelf can hold depends on installation method, wall type, length, width, and depth.
General Guidelines:
For our thicker floating shelves, the brackets are rated to support 50 lbs per stud. If you add additional drywall anchors, the weight capacity increases. For example, if you attach the shelf to two studs and also use a few drywall anchors, the shelf should hold around 150 to 200 lbs. For reference, wall studs are usually spaced 16 inches apart.
Our thinner floating shelves typically hold between 30 and 60 lbs when installed with drywall anchors.
Our visible bracket shelves typically hold between 200 to 360 lbs.
If you need extra-strong custom floating shelf solutions, let us know and we can recommend the optimal bracket solution for your wall.
What finish do we use on our shelves?
We hand finish our standard shelves with a clear Danish oil protective finish. Danish oil penetrates into the wood grain, building a protective finish and enhancing the color and texture of the wood.
We also offer stain options and the option to leave the shelves unfinished. Unfinished shelves will arrive ready for you to stain, paint, or finish the shelves on-site.
How do I care for my wood shelves?
To keep your handmade, made-to-order floating shelves in pristine condition, avoid using harsh chemicals or your everyday household cleaners. A dry, soft cloth is all that you need to clean the shelves.
Refinish every other year by applying linseed oil, tung oil, Danish oil, or a wood wax. Our finish of choice is Danish oil. Refinishing is an optional procedure and only necessary if you notice wear over time.
Are our shelves made of real wood?
Yes, we only use solid hardwood. We do not use veneer or composites for any of our shelves. We primarily use red oak and mahogany, while we also work with white oak, maple, poplar (for painting), and some other species upon request.

Propagation Shelves
What are propagation shelves, and how do they work?
Make plant propagation a breeze with NookWoodworking's stylish and functional propagation shelf. Crafted from high-quality oak or mahogany wood and delicately finished with sumptuous Danish oil, our propagation stations provide the ideal environment for your plant cuttings to take root. Effortlessly double your plant stock and enhance the variety of plants in your home with our propagation solution.
What plants can I propagate?
Not all plants are equally suited for water propagation. We recommend selecting low-maintenance and adaptable plants for this method. Thankfully, there are numerous plant varieties that fit this category, so you have plenty of options. Some of our favorite plants to propagate in our propagation shelves include Philodendrons, Wandering Jews, Bamboo, Spider Plants, Pothos, and more!
How many plant cuttings can my propagation shelves hold?
NookWoodworking offers propagation stations in various sizes and shapes, and the capacity for cuttings you can propagate on one oak or mahogany shelf depends on the shelf’s dimensions. Generally, the smallest geometric shelf can hold one test tube, which is perfect for showcasing individual cuttings.
The maximum number of propagation test tubes our shelves can accommodate is eight. However, if you have a custom size or shape in mind, we're happy to work with you to bring to life a custom propagation station just for you.
How do I care for my propagation shelves & test tubes?
To ensure the longevity and quality of your plant propagation shelf, avoid using harsh chemicals or household cleaning agents. A soft, dry cloth is all you need. After each propagation, use a cotton swab or paper towel to clean the test tube vases to maintain their cleanliness and sterility.
Subway Clocks
How does the NYC Subway Clock work?
Our NYC Realtime Subway Clock utilizes a real-time feed of current subway times to accurately display the comings and goings of the New York City subway system.
Each subway train time clock employs a mini-computer that downloads the data from the NYC Real-Time app. The clock then uses this data to display the train times on its LCD screen. If a train is late or early, the time will automatically adjust itself to reflect that. The subway clock is powered by an AC adapter (included) and can be placed anywhere in your home or office.
Can the NYC Subway Clock display bus times?
Current technology does not allow access to the NYC bus arrival and departure times. Rest assured, should such technology ever become available we would be happy to implement it.
Lap Desks
What is full grain leather?
The highest quality of leather available, full grain leather is made for the strongest and most durable part of an animal's hide ensuring a lifetime of use. As full grain leather is not sanded or buffed during the tanning process it is able to retain its natural shape and durability while maintaining a breathable and comfortable feel. Thanks to the above, full grain leather develops an attractive patina over time which adds to the unique character and distinctive look of each piece.
