- Steel J brackets
- Lag bolts
Tools you need
- Drill, with a 3/16 inch bit
- Level
- Pencil
- Stud finder
- Wrench or socket
Installation steps
- Choose the shelf location. Decide where the shelf goes. Using a level, draw a straight horizontal line where the top edge of the shelf will sit.
- Mark the studs. Use a stud finder to locate the studs along your line and mark them. Studs are usually 16 inches apart. Attach the shelf to at least two studs for the best support.
- Drill pilot holes. With the 3/16 inch bit, drill into the studs along your line. Place the holes a few inches in from each end of the shelf.
- Attach the brackets. Tighten the lag bolts with a wrench or socket. Do not overtighten.
- Set the shelf. Place the wood shelf on top of the mounted brackets.
Other wall types
- No studs where you need them? We recommend toggle bolts for a secure mount.
- Tile. Pre-drill through the tile with a 5/16 inch masonry (diamond) bit, then drill into the studs behind the tile with the 3/16 inch bit, and mount the brackets with the provided lag bolts.
- Brick or concrete. Drill a 1/4 inch hole and secure the brackets with masonry anchors.
