About this piece

A half inch lip runs along the front edge, standing half an inch tall: enough to stop cookbooks, spice jars, mugs, and small frames from sliding off. The sides and back stay open.

Everything else is our standard thick shelf: solid oak or mahogany, an inch and a half thick, 12 to 84 inches long and 4 to 12 deep on hidden brackets, holding roughly 45 to 50 pounds per stud. Walnut stain and poplar for painting round out the woods.

An LED channel is available on this shelf as well. Pick its width, depth, and placement in the form; strip lights not included.

What are floating shelves?

A floating shelf mounts with no visible support. A steel bracket anchors into your wall studs, the shelf slides over it, and all you see is wood. Ours are solid hardwood, built in Brooklyn, with the bracket and hardware included.

How much weight can this shelf hold?

Mounted into wall studs, the hidden steel bracket carries roughly 45 to 50 pounds per stud, and a longer shelf crossing more studs holds proportionally more. The rating for each size is listed on this page.

What does “lip” mean on this shelf?

A raised edge that runs along the front of the shelf. It stands 1/2" tall and is 1/2" wide. It keeps books, records, spice jars, and small frames from sliding off, which is what makes this shelf work as a floating bookshelf or record ledge. The lip runs the front edge only. The sides and back stay open.

What makes this shelf better than generic floating shelves available elsewhere?

Each shelf is made by hand in Brooklyn from high-quality solid hardwood. This shelf adds a raised front lip to keep contents in place, with hidden hardware for a smooth, floating look.

Can this shelf take LED strip lights?

Yes. Add the LED channel in the listing form, sized and placed to your spec, and supply your own strip. The lip stays on the front; the groove goes on the top or underside.
