Custom Shelving & Home Goods

There is a large variety of shelves, including floating shelves, bracket shelves, built-in shelves, corner shelves, freestanding shelves, ledge shelves, and more. Below, we’ve highlighted a few of our favorite types.

Built-In Shelves

These custom wall shelves are built into your space. Think: perfectly placed shelves in the natural crevices of your home. These shelves add a built-in, custom feel.

Floating Shelves

These shelves aren’t magic, but they certainly look like they are! Floating shelves are attached to a wall with invisible brackets to create a highly desired floating look. They’re clean lined and at home in just about every room of your home.

Bracketed Shelves

Bracketed shelves are the opposite of floating shelves; that is, their support system is visible for all to see. These shelves are supported by brackets that are mounted on the wall for a classic look that never disappoints.

Accent Shelves

Accent shelves or trinket shelves are usually smaller shelves that bring big personality to every room. Not meant for serious storage, accent shelves hold small objects like your sunglasses, keys, or trinkets for easy access with an on-point look.

Corner Shelves

Corner shelves are the ultimate space-saving solution, designed to turn any empty corner into a functional feature. Perfect for displaying decor or storing essentials, these shelves make the most of an often-overlooked area in any room.

Ledge Shelves

Ledge shelves are defined by their raised front edge, creating a secure lip that prevents items from sliding off. This makes them the perfect choice for creating a beautiful gallery wall with picture frames, art, or even for organizing spices in the kitchen.

Functional Shelves

Functional shelves, like our key hook, cord hole, propagation station, and display shelves, are the workhorses of the shelving world, designed with utility and strength as the top priority. Perfect for kitchens, offices, and workshops, these shelves provide robust, reliable storage for your heaviest and most-used items.

Magnetic Shelves

Magnetic shelves offer the ultimate convenience with a zero-damage, no-drill installation. These shelves attach securely to any metal surface, like a refrigerator or tool chest, making them a perfect, easily repositionable solution for renters or ever-changing spaces.

The cost of custom wall shelves can range anywhere from $200 to $10,000 and greatly depends on a variety of factors, such as:

• The type of wood you’ve selected for your shelves
• The length, depth, and thickness of your shelves
• The amount of shelves you need
• The design of your shelves including its stain and painting options

Let’s go into each of these shelf categories in more depth.

Wood Type

Different types of wood shelves will cost different amounts, with some types, such as the rare African Blackwood, fetching a price as high as $118.43 for 7.5 lbs of wood, and other types, such as common fir, as low as $1 per foot. Of course, just because these types of wood exist doesn’t mean that you’ll want them as a custom built-in shelf. Your built-in shelves don’t just need to look good; they also need to be functional and withstand years of supporting your belongings. That’s why we offer red oak, mahogany, maple, white oak, and painted poplar woods. They’re the perfect balance between style and function while still offering a hyper-competitive price.

The Size of Your Shelves

Another reason the cost of shelves can vary so greatly is thanks to differing lengths. A 2-foot custom wood shelf is going to cost less than a 12-foot shelf. The same applies to custom shelves that have deeper depth requirements, as the more wood a shelf needs to be built, the higher the cost.

How Many Shelves You Need

Along that same logic, the more shelves you need to create a custom built-in look, the higher your price. If you’re looking for one very large and continuous shelf, you can always join your shelves together to achieve a longer look or loop around the corner. It’s a seamless way to access that built-in look for less!

The Design Of Your Shelves

Have a super wonky corner you’re looking to customize with built-in custom shelves? That’s doable, but that will generally cost you more. Why? Simply put, more complex projects will require more manpower and labor, and more labor costs money. Fortunately, we offer a vast array of design options including freeform shelves, rounded shelves, radius shelves, and curved corner shelves, even double curved shelves (!) you can find a design that stays in your budget.

Surprisingly, it usually costs less to buy customisable shelving online than to build them yourself, especially at NookWoodworking. Think of it this way: when you decide to DIY your own wood shelves, you’re not just paying for materials; you’re also paying for time, space in a rentable woodshop, and any woodworking items you might need during your project that you didn’t take into consideration, like varnish or clamps. This also doesn’t include the hours you’ll need to devote to teaching yourself woodworking and then building your shelf. We always recommend asking yourself just how much your time and labor are valued, because you’ll spend a lot of it working on your shelves. What’s more, DIY shelves are notoriously difficult to mount. Compared to our easily wall-mounted floating shelves and brackets, it can feel near impossible to safely secure them.

On the flip side, purchasing a custom wood shelf from NookWoodworking allows you to sit back and rest easy knowing that you’re not only getting the best price possible but you also don’t have to spend your days in a hot garage sawing wood. We’ve got you covered with the best prices and sturdiest shelves.

Yes, built-in shelves add value to a home, but that value entirely depends on the materials and space utilized. For example, a small bedroom may feel much more cramped when a floating bookshelf that spans an entire wall is installed, and potential homebuyers who are looking for a home with lots of space in the bedrooms may be turned off. Likewise, if your built-in floating shelves consist of IKEA-style particleboard and are clumsily installed, you can probably expect a lower value.

However, thoughtfully installed custom shelving can very easily increase your home value. What’s more, they can also attract a specific type of buyer who is looking for the built-in look of shelves with the feel of designer Brooklyn woodworking craftsmanship. So, don’t be surprised if your home sells a lot faster after installing custom built-ins.

Ultimately, though, the real value is reflective of how you feel in your space. If built-in shelves make you happy and make you excited to wake up in your home every day, then they’re practically invaluable. So go for what makes you happy, and you can’t go wrong.

Head reeling from the potential options for your built-in shelf? You’re not alone. While selecting a wall shelf can be overwhelming, there are steps you can take to narrow down your options.

First, ask yourself about the space you want to install your shelves in. Is there a specific space you are looking to fit your shelves into? What are the measurements of that space? This will provide you with concrete details about what length you need your shelves to be. Additionally, ask yourself how much weight you need your shelves to hold. If you’re looking to stack thick textbooks on top of them, then opt for heavy-duty shelves that can withstand their weight. Or, if you want to use them for more of a decorative look, you can get away with thin floating shelves.

Finally, take a look around your space. What is its general vibe, and what type of vibe do you want your shelves to convey? If you dream of a light and airy space, then consider floating oak shelves. Want something darker and moodier? A bracketed mahogany shelf is perfect for you.

At the end of the day, the custom shelf that you choose should be reflective of both your space and your style needs. Selecting your perfect shelf is a matter of function and style, after all. And lucky for you, at NookWoodworking, we have it all. So go ahead and browse our floating shelves with brackets.
