About this piece

A lap desk for people who still write. The surface is solid mahogany and oak with a pen groove at the top and a low front lip that rests your wrist. Underneath, a full grain leather cushion filled with pellet beads settles onto your lap and stays put.

It comes in two sizes: the standard 20 by 15 inches, room for a notebook and an open book at once, and a small 14 by 8 for a tablet or e-reader.

The cushion comes in dark or light brown leather, fixed to the board with brass pins.

Built in Brooklyn, and we use them ourselves.

What is the lap desk made of?

The top is a single piece of solid mahogany with a full-grain leather cushion beneath, pinned in brass (or silver on the black leather option). The bead-filled cushion settles flat on your lap for long writing sessions.

Is the leather real full-grain leather?

Yes, full-grain, the top grade of leather. It scuffs into a patina rather than peeling like bonded leather, and the writing surface above it is solid wood, not veneer.

Is this lap desk handmade in the USA?

Yes. Each writing desk is built in our Brooklyn shop: wood milled and finished, leather cut and pinned by hand.

How is the desk finished and does it need maintenance?

A protective oil finish keeps the mahogany smooth under paper and pen; wipe with a dry cloth. Condition the leather once in a while and it only improves.

Is this a good gift idea?
